Keyboard samples
Piano Racer uses the Salamander Grand Piano V3 sample set: Alexander Holm’s stereo 48 kHz / 24-bit recordings of a Yamaha C5, released under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license. The source instrument was remapped to SFZ by kinwie.
Piano Racer selected three recorded velocity layers at all 30 minor-third pitch anchors, limited each recording to at most seven seconds, and converted the source FLAC files to stereo 48 kHz AAC. Piano Racer hosts these adapted copies with the app, so playing does not contact a third-party sample service. No endorsement by the original author or remapper is implied.
Reed Electric and Electric Grand use Greg Sullivan’s Wurlitzer EP200 and Yamaha CP80 recordings from Greg Sullivan’s E-Pianos, mapped to SFZ by kinwie and released with the author’s permission under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license. Piano Racer self-hosts the original FLAC recordings, preserves the recorded velocity layers plus the source pitch, tuning, and level mappings, shifts Reed Electric’s velocity thresholds so a neutral computer-keyboard/autoplay strike uses its medium recording, and extends only the outer key regions to MIDI 0–127. No endorsement by Greg Sullivan, kinwie, or the instrument manufacturers is implied.
FM Keys, Harpsichord, and Pipe Organ use the TX81Z FM Piano, English Harpsichord Normal sustains, and Pipe Organ Loud instruments from the Versilian Community Sample Library, created by Versilian Studios LLC and dedicated to the public domain under Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal. Piano Racer self-hosts the AAC copies from the smpldsnds/sgossner-vcsl browser mirror, adapts their mappings for full MIDI 0–127 coverage, and omits the harpsichord’s separate key-release layer.
Playback uses the MIT-licensed smplr Web Audio sampler. The complete selected instrument is loaded before a race so every MIDI note remains available, including pitches outside the selected song.
PDMX music database
Piano Racer’s searchable library is built from PDMX version 9, created by Phillip Long, Zachary Novack, Julian McAuley, and Taylor Berg-Kirkpatrick and released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.
The current Piano Racer pack contains 175,522 single-part MusicXML scores. It excludes entries that PDMX marks as having conflicting license metadata, and entries that Piano Racer’s rights review identifies as likely still under copyright despite their public-domain or CC0 label. The filtered pack is hosted with Piano Racer and does not cause your browser to contact PDMX or MuseScore when you search or load a score. The song library’s popularity order and community ratings come from the dataset’s own metadata; its genres, difficulty levels and race lengths are Piano Racer’s estimates from the scores. Piano Racer also cleans up and normalises the dataset’s titles and composer names; the score files themselves are served unchanged.
The Creative Commons license covers the PDMX dataset as a compilation and its metadata. Each score in it was marked Public Domain or CC0 by the person who uploaded it to MuseScore, and Piano Racer makes no claim about a score beyond that label.

Profile avatars
The avatars a player can choose are drawn with DiceBear and bundled with Piano Racer as static images, so choosing one contacts no other service. DiceBear is the generator; the artwork in each drawing style is its own designer’s work under its own license, and every style Piano Racer uses is credited here.
